I spent bloody ages trying to get sockets to work with LanMangler. I think I
eventually did get a rather flaky system set up but because of all the TSRs
that were required, it only left about 380K free memory (even with QEMM!). So
I gave up on the idea of sockets.
Then I tried Trumpet Winsock which works with a packet driver or the
NDIS-to-packet driver Shim "DIS_PKT.DOS". And it couldn't be easier ! The
driver uses 2720 bytes and the one necessary TSR uses 2544 bytes (both in the
High memory area !). I haven't looked back since !

The SCSI controller must directly control the hard drive. 32-bit disk access
in Windows directly controls the hard drive; the SCSI controller doesn't like
this. To the best of my knowledge a Fast SCSI-2 controller is 16 bits wide,
and 10MB/sec sustained transfer. A Fast-and-Wide SCSI-2 should be 32 bits
wide.
In short, with SCSI you can not use 32 bit disk access, as this makes Windows
attempt to take over the hard drive, and SCSI drives can only be controlled by
the SCSI controller. I'm not sure if you can use Windows for Workgroups
32-bit FILE access.

I have mailed you Locomotive Software's "tuning.faq". Although this is
mostly about tuning KA9Q, read section 11 entitled "Fragmentation" which
is the answer to your question.
Since it's over 1,000 lines long, and since Locomotive request that it
only be redistributed un-edited, I'm not posting the whole thing here.
Please address further requests for it to tuning@locomotive.com (replies
set thither), or else by the time you read this it may have been placed
on ftp.demon.co.uk:/pub/docs/KA9Q.

Subject: WinSock
I'd really be interested in trying to get winsock to work on my 486 PC at
home. I'd like to connect to the computer system at work....Are there an
shareware drivers for Slip/PPP/etc on the Unix Workstation side???
Thanks in Advance,
Michael Brown
